Subject: Health/Career and Life Management
Brief Description of Activity:
Students will go to the website, http://alis.alberta.ca/occinfo/Content/RequestAction.asp?format=html&aspAction=GetHomePage&Page=Home, where they will search for possible careers by title, interest, subject, and industry. Students will create a “Personal List” of careers that interest them from their searches. Once a student has completed this, they will narrow their list down to three career choices. Students will print out the information pages on these occupations and add them to their portfolio.

Rationale for Computer Integration:
Computers have been integrated into this assignment to allow students to explore possible career options using an online resource. Students can explore the website and search in various ways. Once they select careers, they can read detailed information about their career choices including education needed, working conditions, attributes, salary, etc. Using computers for this kind of search is an effective, interesting, and educational way to learn about occupations.
I think this is a very important activity for students to do, well done. I think starting this is grade 11 would even be a good idea. I think it would be neat if you could get people into the class with different careers to talk about it, since reading things on the internet doesn't give the full picture. Or have community members who are willing to set up a time to meet with individual students would also be an option.
